What is a CAM and how does it work?
A cam is a rotating or sliding piece in a mechanical linkage used especially in transforming rotary motion into linear motion. It is often a part of a rotating wheel (e.g. an eccentric wheel) or shaft (e.g. a cylinder with an irregular shape) that strikes a lever at one or more points on its circular path.
What is the purpose of a cam?
Your camshaft acts as a timing device that controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves, as well as setting the valve overlap that occurs at top dead center on the exhaust stroke. The shaft is constructed with several journals that ride on bearings within the engine.
Does a cam add horsepower?
Other cams can add as much as 50 HP or more, but the more power you get from a cam, the higher up the powerband the power usually starts. If you have a 224/224 cam (instead of my 205/212), you may have to wait until 2500 or 3000 RPM to get power, but it will be more.
What does a cam do for performance?
The amount, length of time, and point at which the cams open the valves all play a big part in dictating how much power and torque an engine develops, where in the rev range it does this, and if the engine will even run at all.
What are the three types of CAM?
Cams can be produced in any shape, but the most common shapes are: Circular. Circular cams use an off-centre pivot to cause the follower to move up and down. Pear. Pear cams are called this as they have the shape of a pear. Snail or drop. Heart-shaped or constant velocity.
What is CAM and its types?
A cam is a mechanical device used to transmit motion to a follower by direct contact. The driver is called the cam and the driven member is called the follower. In a cam follower pair, the cam normally rotates while the follower may translate or oscillate.
Does a cam make a car louder?
A cam can make an engine louder. I’ve done extensive testing in an anechoic chamber with a motoring dyno driving a non firing engine with working cylinder heads but no pistons. When you change cams you have probably changed the angle of the grind on the cam. Sometimes this will affect closing velocities of the valves.
What things use a cam mechanism?
Cams are commonly used in engines to control valves (in which the valve is the follower), sewing machines, children’s toys and many other mechanical applications. The shapes of individual Cams are designed to produce specific types of motion.
What does a bigger cam do for an engine?
A performance camshaft is just a camshaft whose lobe profile is tailored to utilize more of an engine’s potential. usually a higher lift on the lobe, which increases in length of the valve stroke, which allows for more air to enter through the inlet valves, increasing the power potential of the engine.
How much HP gain from headers?
In general, a quality set of headers should provide an increase of approximately 10-20 horsepower, and if you’re restrained with your right foot, you may even see an increase in fuel mileage.
How much HP does a cam add to a 350?
Replacing the 2G with a Q-Jet and intake alone can be worth 25-30 hp. Toss in a mild cam and cylinder head upgrade and the power gains really start to add up.
What gives a cam a lopey idle?
Overlap causes misfires at idle and that makes the lope or choppy idle. It causes a lot of intake reversion which causes the engine to basically choke on it’s own exhaust during idle. The more the overlap the more the lope will be.
Can you put a cam in a stock engine?
Registered. You can ‘t swap just the cam and nothing else. Not counting the fact that sticking in a big cam in a stock engine and it running worse due to a mismatch with cylinder head and intake airflow, at the very least you MUST swap the springs.
Are cammed cars illegal?
It is illegal, but a lot of of people get away with it. I think if your car is moded; cam, loud exhaust, then there is a better chance you will be busted for the tail lights. A stock car that does not attract so much attention will have a better chance of not being busted; but it is only a matter of time.
How much difference does a cam make?
A normal bolt on car with a cam can usually go 390-440 depending on the choice of cam and bolt ons. A head/ cam car can usually make 425-475 depending on the set up, though there has been set ups getting close to the 500 mark.
